Husband and wife | Acoustic Duo | Songwriters | Business Owners

The Twin Cities-based acoustic duo Matt & Laurel have been making music together since 2015. Before they both swiped right on Tinder, they were each performing solo and with a variety of other area musicians. When they matched, they quickly bonded over their shared love of music, and began dating in 2014. They were married four years later and in that time, they decided to commit to another level by becoming not just Matt and Laurel, but Matt & Laurel, the band.

In 2015, Matt was performing solo shows in the Twin Cities, while Laurel was singing in an 80s cover band and performing at weddings and special events. Later, when the band went their separate ways, Laurel wasn't ready to get off the stage. At the same time, Matt’s desire grew to play more and more. Joining musical forces was the best and easiest decision they ever made. Soon thereafter, Matt & Laurel began performing at local venues throughout Minnesota and Iowa.

Over the next six years, the duo learned over 200+ songs and played over 350+ gigs around Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Featuring dynamic vocals and acoustic guitar, Matt & Laurel deliver a fun twist on all your favorites. With an eclectic song list that just keeps growing, you’re sure to find a song you love! They don't stick to just one genre; they play music from more than six decades --  anything from Elvis Presley to Whitney Houston to Chris Stapleton.

In addition to covering all the hits, Matt & Laurel are songwriters who love creating and playing original work. Matt released his debut EP, Hope, in 2016, and a debut duo album is planned for the near future.

My name is Matt Trost.  I’m a 35-year-old left-handed introvert, who loves my wife, music, re-runs of “The Office”, and chicken fingers.  My journey started back in 1985 in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, as my dad was in the Army.  We moved around a bit in my youth, with stops in Texas, Colorado, and Oklahoma before settling in Minnesota.  Music has always been a big part of my life, and it’s the one thing I always found myself gravitating towards. My parents used to sing me to sleep; we’d listen to tunes on the radio, and as I grew up my older sister introduced me to a lot of the music that became direct influences on the music I play today.

I started playing alto saxophone in 4th grade after failing the rhythm test to be a drummer, but that failure didn't deter me.  I played saxophone until 7th grade when I finally found my rhythm and I made the cut as a drummer in the school band. Drums would be my “weapon of choice” throughout high school, including beatboxing. In high school, I began playing in garage bands, including a Blink-182 cover band playing drums and picking up bass guitar and vocals. I always loved singing, but always felt really shy singing in public. However, after singing for the first time in my 10th grade talent show, I was hooked. I later formed another band, which focused on original music. I played drums, a little bit of bass guitar, and lead vocals. By the end of our senior year we produced and recorded our own full-length album: an experience I'll never forget.

After graduation, I traded in my drum set for an acoustic guitar.  I’ve always been a writer, so adding music to my writing was extraordinarily rewarding. I played a few open mic nights before getting the chance at my first solo show at Roddy’s Bar & Grille in North Saint Paul.  From there I was fortunate enough to book other gigs and continued to pursue a solo musical career. Playing solo was fun, but I longed for having someone to share the stage with.  As fate would have it, I  swiped right on Tinder on a beautiful blonde woman, who turned out to have killer vocals, and our connection was immediate.  We began dating and not long after she became my partner on the stage and in life. Asking Laurel to marry me was the smartest thing I’ve ever done and I can't wait to see where our journey will take us.

Oh, hey there! I'm Laurel, Lita, Lo, Lolo: 50% of Matt & Laurel and 95% caffeinated almost every day. I've been entertaining people from the stage since I was 3 years old, and since then, I've spent my life sharing my voice to create beautiful experiences and memories with others.

When I was a toddler, my parents, who are also professional musicians, brought me up on stage to join them during a performance. I sang along to Gloria Estefan's "1, 2, 3" and from that moment on, I was hooked. For over 20 years, they spent 6 nights a week sharing their love of music with the world, which meant I spent a lot of my childhood at bars and clubs, sipping on kiddie cocktails and sitting too close to the speakers. As I grew, I sang in grade school productions, choir performances in high school, vocal competitions in college, and one or two karaoke nights at the campus bars. I even auditioned for American Idol and The Voice, which was by far one of the most unique experiences of my life. After receiving my degree in Public Relations from Drake University in 2008, I pursued a career in marketing and event planning.

At the same time, I sang at night and on the weekends all over the country, including performance venues, bars, weddings, competitions and more. I also collaborated with a variety of musicians from the Twin Cities, and learned to adapt my performances to different environments, while always staying true to who I am as a musical artist. A few months after my husband, Matt and I met in 2014, the band I had been working with decided to go our separate ways. Matt was working as a solo artist in the area, and I wasn’t ready to step off stage, so I slyly made my way into his act. In 2015, we made it official in the music world as Matt & Laurel. It was the easiest and best decision to not only marry the love of my life, but join forces to create our musical empire.

In addition to being the lead singer (and long-winded wife), I'm also the booking agent and marketing director for Matt & Laurel.  With my background in vocal performance and event planning, I manage our appearance calendar, work with venues and clients, and market our events. It's a true gift to be able to work each day on something that I love and am passionate about — Matt & Laurel isn't a job; it's who we are at a core level.

As we continue to work toward becoming full-time musicians, we've found a balance that allows us to do what we love while also loving what we do! We're so fortunate to be able to live out our dreams, and we couldn't do it without the support of our family, friends, and fans. We're eternally grateful for you.
